Market research

Market research on the Indonesia related communities in the Netherlands. It is estimated that over 1.3 million Dutch residents have affiliation with Indonesia. Many of those were born in the Netherlands but lived in the Dutch East Indies for many years, or have parents or grandparents who lived in the Dutch East Indies. The Indonesia related commmunities in the Netherlands are:

Indo-Dutch population
They consist of Europeans, Asians, and persons of mixed European-Asian blood who were born in the Dutch East Indies or whose parents or grandparents were born in the Dutch East Indies.

Moluccan-Dutch population
The Moluccan-Dutch were born in Maluku, or their parents or grandparents were born in Maluku. Those who decided to migrate to the Netherlands were mostly ex-soldiers from the KNIL, the Dutch Colonial Army.

Chinese-Indonesian population
After Indonesia’s independence thousands of Chinese Indonesians have migrated to the Netherlands due to the unstable political situation. However, most of them came as a result of the Souharto coup in 1965.

Chinese-Surinamese population
Between the years 1853 and 1870 many ethnic Chinese from Java were recruited by the Dutch for the plantations in the Dutch Colony of Suriname, South America. As a result of Suriname’s independence in 1975, many Chinese-Surinamese have migrated to the Netherlands, most of them before 1980.

Javanese-Surinamese population
Between the years 1890 and 1940, many ethnic Javanese were contracted by the Dutch colonial rulers in Suriname to work in the plantations. As a result of Suriname’s independence in 1975, many Javanese-Surinamese have migrated to the Netherlands.

Indonesians
Many of those came to the Netherlands as students and have stayed there after finishing their studies. Others have recently settled in the Netherlands on a labour contract, mostly in the field of nursing or ICT.

Adopted Indonesians
Indonesians who were adopted by Dutch families.

TransCity has done both desk and field research on these communities to discover which communities are most relevant for Western Union and what are the best ways to develop releations with these communities.
